Yerba Buena Lofts

The project occupies a whole depth of a city block between Folsom Street and Shipley Street in the Yerba Buena district of San Francisco. As an antithesis to a typical Victorian style residences seen in all parts of the city, the Profilit-clad glass blocks are a new interpretation of the Victorian House “bay windows” required by code. Despite the low floor-to-ceiling heights, deep and narrow structural grids, the dwelling units are made into very attractive live/work spaces thanks to a fully glazed façade and double-height mezzanine arrangements. All 200 units are rectangular with a uniform width of 4.9m and depths varying from 15 to 20m. The first 4 levels form a "podium", which contain a vast parking garage within.

サンフランシスコ都心部、メイン通りのマーケットストリートの南側はSOMA地区と呼ばれる、かつては工場や倉庫しかないエリアであったが、近年はサンフランシスコ近代美術館をはじめ多くの文化施設、商業施設がつくられ注目を集めるようになった。その一角に、200戸の吹抜け付きメゾネット型集合住宅を計画した。市の条例によってビクトリア様式と呼ばれる出窓を作ることが義務付けられる中、コンクリートとガラスによるミニマルな「出窓」の表現に挑戦し、保守的な景観政策をとる市当局との長い協議の末に今までになかった全く新しいタイプの集合住宅が完成した。
