Before the flood control work in early Showa, the Arakawa River meandered near Funato, and it is said that the name "Ukima" originated from the way the opposite bank looked like a "floating island." Looking at a map from 100 years ago, we see that the Arakawa River used to flow directly in front of the entrance lounge we designed, and that an oval-shaped sandbar also existed. Although the river no longer there, we wanted to create a space that evokes the image of a large living room facing the water, while imagining the landscape of the past. A single, flowing wall encompasses facilities shared by the 600 households—a library, cafe, kids' corner, and meeting booths—within the large space. Indoor green and art themed on "the sway of water" add color, while light streams in through the large windows. Each of the two guest rooms, designed as a wooden cabin, receives an art themed on "light".
昭和初期の治水工事以前、船渡付近では荒川は大きく蛇行して流れ、対岸が「浮島」のように見えたことから「浮間」の地名が生まれたと言われる。100年前の地図を見ると、我々がデザインを担当したエントランスラウンジの正面を荒川が流れ、楕円形の中州が存在していたことが確認できる。現在そこに川はないが、かつての風景を想像しながら、水辺に面する大きなリビングルームをイメージした空間にしたいと考えた。600世帯がシェアするライブラリー、カフェ、キッズコーナー、会議ブースなどの利便施設を、流れるような１枚の壁が包含して大空間を蛇行する。インドアグリーンと「水辺のゆらぎ」をテーマにした３点のアートワークが彩りを添え、日中は大きな窓から光が入る。別棟にあるゲストルームは、木造小屋をイメージした空間の中に「光」をテーマにしたアートを設置した。
