Kawabe-gawa is a river known to have the clearest stream of water in Japan. The river runs deep through the mountains in Southern Kumamoto, where the people of Sagara Village enjoy the beauty of its pristine natural environment. Our proposal intended to be a community hub for the villagers, as well as a recreational rest house for summer water activities. The large roofs resemble a set of tea leaves, from the famed Sagara tea, one of the top tea brands in Japan. At the same time, the building is a place to remember the severe flooding in 2020 which devastated large areas of the village and the greater Hitoyoshi region.
