The area known as "Yanesen" is celebrated for its atmospheric charm, retaining temples, shrines, and Showa-era traditional houses. Mindful of the project's scale and its impact on the scenery, we engaged in extensive discussions on how to best harmonize the building with the context while showing it due respect. Key concepts such as "volumetric articulation," "restrained self-expression," and "subtle materials and colors" were adopted, along with the theme "Shades of Gray," thereby limiting the material palette to gray tones while incorporating Japanese elements—such as wood and lattice work—into the facade. In the common areas, a slanted wooden ceiling extends throughout the space. Lighting levels are kept low to highlight exquisite craftsmanship— lacquer, textiles, and Komatsu stone—transforming the residents' daily circulation paths into a space that evokes a sense of serenity, comfort, and richness.
